How bumpy is it? (volatility & drawdown)

Two numbers tell you how rough the ride is and how deep the worst drop was.

Volatility is a fancy word for bumpiness. A high number means the value jumps around a lot day to day. A low number means it’s calmer.

Low volatility is a gentle road. High volatility is a wild one.

Max drawdown is the worst drop from a high point to a low point. It answers the scary question: “What’s the most this fell before bouncing back?”

the worst drop
Drawdown measures the deepest valley after a peak.

Volatility is how bumpy the bus ride feels the whole way. Drawdown is the single biggest pothole you hit.

Where these numbers come from

Finisdom calculates both from the daily price history of what you own — usually the last year of trading days. Bigger history, steadier number.
